Picked up two of these guys the other day (this was my second) since they happened to be in the store and I happened to be in the store. A little bit of background first: I'm a 26 year-old collector of many things including robotic pets. I've tried out Furbys, Micropets, Neopets, Scoozie pets, Petal-chi, Mutsu, Fureal Friends, and more so I consider myself a bit of an expert on the subject.
To start with, these things eat batteries, have triple A's on hand. Second, I don't have any playsets, I'm just testing the hamsters.
Upon opening and removing this little guy I tried out "cuddle mode", which was a little disappointing. The hamster will lie still and make cute noises every few seconds or so but he isn't really responding to anything. "Try me mode" is when the hamster is off but you can push his nose to hear a random noise, not a lot of fun there. Now play mode, that's where the fun is. The wheels are fast and the grip is really strong, I promptly put it on my boyfriend to see if it would climb up his shirt and it did, hit the back of the couch, made a springy noise and ran back down. Even he cracked up at it. It tackles carpet and all hard surfaces no problem, and makes a ton of different noises, some 40 in all, and each of the four designs sounds unique!. You have to be careful around stairs but all in all it does what it was made to do and cheaply at that. At normal retail they're cheaper than most action figures.
(I got mine at normal retail and I suggest you wait until you can too. If you have kids and can't find them try giving a cute IOU written from the hamster saying how it will come to live with your child after X-mas. They have a guarantee from you, you have a kid who still has something to look forward to after December. All is well.)
Remember these are for ages 3 and up and have motorized parts. It says in the instruction to supervise your child, so do so. Risk is probably minimal but if you have a kid you wouldn't give a RC car to then they're probably too little for these.
So to wrap up
Good: Funny and varied sounds, cheap, cute, runs fast and randomly, fascinates my dog!
Bad: Hard to find (for now), eats batteries (2 AAA), can pinch, can be broken with a moderate impact.
Have a hamster good day! |

First of all, I was shocked at how much these cost on here but soon realized it's not Amazon, but vendors trying to take advantage of the demand for Zhu Zhu Pets. It's the Wii story all over again and once again, I'm not putting out more than what these usually cost. I got my daughter Num Nums at Wal-Mart for 1/4 what one would cost me here right now. I think I'll wait!
Anyway, the Zhu Zhu Pets are a great toy for my 4 year old who wanted a hamster and good for me too, seeing that I do not want a smelly rodent to clean up after. They're cute and I love the names. But seriously, they are not worth $32. Wait until demand has slowed and pay the $8 that Wal-Mart is charging when they're in stock! |
Hallelujah my Zhu Zhu Pets work - Have plenty of AAA Batteries on hand...

I got up early and was able to get Zhu Zhu Pets hamsters at WalMart. So glad because I know they are selling out stores because I've been calling everywhere.
Anyway, my kids have been playing with them all day. And then hair got wrapped around the little wheel and I thought one had broke so I spent forever trying to get the hair off -- but that's not what was making an additional squealing noise and making the wheels stop turning.
The little Zhu Zhu pets hamsters just needed new batteries. They came with 2 AAA batteries from the manufacturer -- and I'm sure they weren't in the store that long so that little hands could've worn out the batteries thru the "try me" window.
They must've just come with batteries not as good as the ones I changed them into. Because I just popped in some Duracel or whatever batteries -- and now the Zhu Zhu Pets run even faster than when we first bought them this morning.
My children are playing with them as I write.
Now we want all the Zhu Zhu pets in the collection -- and the accessories. Maybe by Christmas or before... |
Amazing! Funny! Adorable! Entertained the whole Family!

I finally found a Num Nums @ Toys R us for only 9.99!
I was so excited to get it to my granddaughter Gracie, so I opened the package and put Num Nums in my purse. When my granddaughter came by me I pushed the little nose and out came this little peep from in my purse. Well then we were OFF! Out came Num Nums and scooted all over the floor, like a mini bumper car. Our 2yr old Gracie was squealing with delight and jumping up and down clapping her hands! To describe her as delighted, would be a gross under exaggeration. We thought she might have a toddler breakdown she was so tickled! The adults were cracking up and of course Num Nums was non stop. It was an absolute riot and the cutest little toy I have ever seen! Its an amazing little hamster that will just go and go and makes all these ADORABLE little sounds. I can definitely for see Zhu Zhu "olympics"..or other activities creative playtimes come from these little creatures.
A must have..Can't wait to add to the collection and buy my other two granddaughters one. My son even wants to take it to work and let it "loose" .. so it just isnt for kids! |

My 10 year old daughter LOVES this toy. It's sold out in the local stores. This seller had it for a reasonable price. The seller sent it quickly and in the original package.
The toy comes with batteries. You touch its head or nose and it makes cute sounds. It has wheels on the bottom to scoot around. If you buy the other accessories like the Hamster Ball and the hamster scoots around in that too.
The toy is pricey because it moves. My daughter is happy to have one for now. Maybe the longer the toy is on the market, perhaps the price will drop. |
Cute little toy!

I bought three of these zhu-zhus for my 3 year old daughter for Christmas. They are a hit! This is my review of the pros / cons of the zhu-zhu:
Lets start off with the cons:
- If you just bought the zhu zhu.. with no accessories (no fun house or add on sets), then yeah.. I can see how this toy may be a bit boring. The accessory kits definitely enhance the fun value!
- Keep away from hair! A friend of mine had to cut her daughter's hair after the zhu-zhu got caught in her hair!
- They pinch sometimes. If you pick up the zhu zhu in a specific way while the wheels are running, you'll get pinched. Best thing here is to stay away from the wheels.. pick up the zhu zhu from the top only.
- Some are better "quality" than others. We have three of them.. this gray one is kinda slow compared to the brown one we have (i.e. the brown one pushes the car from the garage perfectly on carpet.. this gray one struggles a little bit).
- Don't push on the floor! This happened to a friend of mine.. you push your zhu zhu around on the floor, you'll strip the gears and break the zhu zhu!
Some of the pros:
- They are so much fun to run and chase! As mentioned, we do have the fun house and add on accessories. Definitely recommend those! It is so much fun to get a few zhu-zhus in that thing and watch them run around, chase after them after they "escape" - you never know what they will do next!
- The sounds are kinda cute! I never expected some of the sounds coming out from these things! My 3 year old gets a kick when the zhu-zhu moos or imitates a chicken - the sounds are cute!
- The cats love them! If you have a cat.. yeah, have fun with that.. have some adorable pictures of even my kittens playing with these things!
- Sensory detectors - one of the best qualities about these things! On their nose they have a little sensory detector - so when they bump into a wall or whatever, they change direction!
- They may / may not work on carpet! Some of the other reviews say they dont work on carpet. Well.. my three work just fine on my carpet! They would probably work better on hard floor, but carpet it is for this house! They wont work on the shaggy type carpet though.. but regular carpet, they work fine on.. at least all three of them here do!
Overall - we love our zhu-zhus! It really is a fun toy, and I'm so glad that we bought them for our daughter.. she loves to play with them! |

| I work at a toy store and these toys do sell out fast!! Once they are in, they are out the same day. They are fun toys, but expect them to be hard to find, they come in fast, but leave the shelves the same day. Also, you are limited to a certain amount at some stores. If next time an associate tells you that fellow teammembers are buying them and selling them at a profit online. Report it immediately to the store supervisor/director. If an associate buys these items (most likely using their employee discount)and then sells them online they are misusing their discount and can be terminated. Where I work that is what happens. The store manager or supervisor can implement these rules on their employees and are within in their right to do so or at least limit their quanitites. Don't let them get away with it!! |
adorable to the max! fabulous little toy for kids! love it.

| Very creative and lots of fun. The grandkids thought this was a wonderful, cuddly "buddy"...it is well-built and is an excellent dollar value. |

| My niece loved receiving this pet to play with and many others just like it. I think there is little if any educational value in owning this pet. However, it is a good way to simulate for a child how to care for a real hamster and understand the importance of feeding, cleaning and caring for any pet. It would also be a great springboard for teachers to bring to class to learn about hamsters without having a real one. |
